Welcome to Mid-Island
While Nantucket has a central downtown, just a mile away lies the fast-growing “mid-island” area. A short walk, bike ride, or bus trip from town brings you to a vibrant mix of fine dining, takeout spots, specialty shops, a popular entertainment venue, and charming pocket parks.
Beach Plum, Naushop, and Nashaquisset are residential communities situated in various parts of the Mid-Island area. Mid-Island, being centrally located, offers easy access to any part of Nantucket. Outside of Town, Mid-Island serves as a one-stop destination for errands, groceries, and dining. Home to Stop & Shop, the island's largest grocery store. Mid-Island is also the center for most healthcare and emergency services, including the Nantucket Cottage Hospital, Urgent Care, and Dan's Pharmacy. The area is always lively, especially during the summer.
It also features a variety of restaurants. For quick bites, grab a sandwich from Nantucket Meat & Fish, a slice of pizza from Sophie T's, or some Tex-Mex customizable tacos, burritos, and bowls from the Boat House. Madaket Millie's also has an offshoot spot located at the Milestone Rotary. Breakfast sandwiches and pastries can be picked up from Wicked Island Bakery or the Nantucket Island Bake Shop. For sit-down meals, try brunch at Island Kitchen, enjoy a casual Italian dinner at Pi Pizzeria, visit Kitty Murtagh's Irish Pub, or enjoy some local seafood at the Sea Grille. Not to miss is The Chicken Box, an iconic late-night venue with live music. On Amelia Drive, you'll find Supta Yoga, Pip & Anchor, a gourmet market, and the Green Lady, the island's first cannabis dispensary.
While this part of the island lacks beach access, there are parks, playgrounds, and trails to explore. Just off the Milestone Rotary is the Land Bank's Creeks Preserve Park, which offers views of the Creeks salt marsh, Nantucket Harbor, and Brant Point Lighthouse. This 8-acre property highlights Nantucket’s distinctive coastal ecology and is perfect for a midday dog walk or picnic. The Discovery Playground and adjacent walking trails are along Old South Road, and across the street is a local favorite, 3-Way Scoops Ice Cream. You can also explore the miles of bike paths that start in Mid-Island and lead to all areas of the island.
