Welcome to Madaket
The western tip of the island is renowned for its breathtaking sunsets, expansive natural beauty, and intriguing stories of vibrant characters. On the way to Madaket, located just under 6 miles from town, there are many walking trails through diverse ecosystems. Explore grasslands, woodlands, and wetlands at the Sanford Farm, Ram Pasture & The Woods conservation areas, covering over 780 acres. Once you get out to Madaket, you can also enjoy a walk along Madaket Beach, which extends from Hither Creek to Smith’s Point.
There are two bike path options to Madaket from downtown: follow the Madaket Road path the whole way, or start on Cliff Road for stunning bay views before it joins the Madaket Road path.
Madaket is a quiet enclave with a large beach with strong ocean waves ideal for surfcasting and surfing. Despite erosion over the years, its beauty and stunning sunsets are considered some of the island's best. Westward, Madaket Beach becomes Smith's Point, a 1.5-mile peninsula bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the south and Madaket Harbor to the north. This scenic stretch is popular for surfcasting, with abundant striped bass, bluefish, and bonito, especially in the fall. Shorebirds and seals often gather here, too. Driving onto Smith's Point with a 4x4 or fishing requires a permit. For more fishing opportunities, you can book a charter at the nearby Madaket Marine. You can fish in Madaket Harbor or venture offshore into the Atlantic.
Just a short walk from the beach is Madaket's only restaurant, Millie's. Open from Memorial Day to Columbus Day weekends, it offers lunch and dinner in casual dining rooms with ocean views or outside on a terrace with picnic tables, perfect for little kids to run around. The Mexican-inspired menu includes generous dishes ideal for a takeaway beachside lunch or pre-sunset dinner, such as shrimp tacos, lobster quesadillas, and po'boy sandwiches, paired with famous drinks like the Madaket Mystery rum punch and Millie's Margarita. Next door, Millie's Market provides beach essentials, some groceries, coffee, and ice cream.
